What is Spiritual Growth?

10 Suggestions For Kingdom Seekers

What is Spiritual Growth and how would we know if we are growing Spiritually? Good question. Let’s find the answers, shall we?

what is spiritual growth

Simply saying yes to Jesus, and becoming a Christian, does not automatically make you a Spiritual mature. There is yet so much to learn and so much to ‘unlearn’ in this walk to Spiritual Maturity.

I have therefore catered this bible study lesson, for the answering of these two main questions.

So Then, What Is Spiritual Growth

We must first keep in mind that Spiritual Growth is a Process and you are God’s Work in Progress. This Spiritual Maturity that we are endeavoring to achieve does not happen overnight. It is a life-long development of becoming more and more like Jesus Christ. It first begins in the Mind, but as your Mind is transformed so does your thoughts and your conversations.

You realize also that the activities that you take part in also changes and so does your behavior. In other words when this Growth Begins it affects every part of your life. I like to refer to our process of Spiritual Growth as Metamorphosis which in the method of developing from immaturity to maturity.

Philippians 2:5

Let this mind be in you,

which was also in Christ Jesus

So, as we attempt to understand what is Spiritual Growth, it is important to note that this change first begins in our Mind. Our minds are very power tools. It is the seat of Control for our whole body. If something goes wrong in the mind the whole feels it. As my pastor would say, it will either make you or break you.

Because our minds are so very powerful, the enemy has devised a cunning plan to fight against of mind of God’s people, because he knows that once he can keep our minds off of God’s promises, he can keep us from reaching where we should be in God.

Our mind is part of our Soul realm. Man is made up of Body, Soul and Spirit. We are Spirits that lives in a Body and possess a Soul. It is in the realm of the Soul where we experience all these difficulties. Paul calls it ‘warring in our members’ because it is the soul that is made up of our emotions, our will, our mind, our motives, intellect and attitudes.

It in our Soul where we experience any hurts and pains. It is our soul that feels distressed and depressed. So then, when our soul is changed we emerge as something beautiful in the eyes of God where men can see the glory of God shining through us.

Putting On the Mind of Christ

In order for our mind to change we must daily practice ‘putting on the mind of Christ’ which includes thinking and behaving like Jesus Christ and living and walking in the Word that we read or hear.

It is a good practice, when faced with any situation, to ask yourself, What would Jesus Do? How would he behave? What would he say? When we do so, we will realize, most of the times, that what Jesus would have said or done is completely  different to what we had in our thoughts to do!

As we continue to read the Word of God and apply it to our lives,  we will realize that as situations arises, the word of God will also come to minister to us right at you point of need. Be careful not to ignore when this happens for it is actually God attempting to intervene and give us direction.

While we are understanding what is spiritual we must also keep in mind that we cannot achieve this growth without the leading of the Holy Ghost which is the Spirit of God. We cannot grow without God’s Spirit teaching us how to become more and more like him.

Many times we might feel like failures, trying so hard to do everything right, and failing every time, but we must realized that we are not in this walk by ourselves, the Holy Ghost is our helper. We are attempting to do something that was not made for us to do on our own. God realized that we could not gain Spiritual Growth through our own power and our strength, so he sent us assistance.

Let us look at this verse, to learn more about what is spiritual growth:

Romans 12: 2

And be not conformed ( to take pattern from) to this world:

but be ye transformed ( changed )

by the renewing ( to make new again or different) of your mind

that ye may prove what is that good and acceptable

and perfect will of God.

For us to begin this walk to Spiritual Maturity, we must first change our seamstress!

Yep you heard me right! That’s exactly what the Word is saying.

The World ( our old seamstress) must no longer be our Pattern. We must no longer fashion our lives to be acceptable by the humanity. For the world knows not Jesus Christ. We must take our pattern straight from the Word of God and the life of Jesus. He is our perfect example.

As the change takes place, you will slowly begin to unlearn, the practices that you learned while being in sin, as you continue to be reformed into a vessel prepared for the Master’s use. As you put on the mind of Christ, daily you mind will be made different. Soon the things that used to be a part of your life, that seemed so difficult to overcome, will be reduced to a distant unwanted memory.

If you do not take away anything from this bible study on what is spiritual growth, please remember one thing: growth in God is a lifelong Process and everyone grows in spirituality at a different pace. Our growth is dependent on the time allotted to prayer, the Word of God, Bible Study and surrounding ourselves with the things of God.

How would You know that You’re Growing?

Now that you know what is Spiritual Growth How will you know if you have been growing?

The following things will occur in your life when you are growing spiritually:

1. You’ll begin to bear the fruit of the Spirit which is mentioned in Galatians 5: 22.

  • In place of Hatred you’ll have continued Love.
  • In place of Anger and Malice you’ll have real Joy.
  • In place of Worry and Fear you’ll have Peace.
  • In place of a Impatience you’ll have Longsuffering / Endurance.
  • In place of being Hurtful and Harsh you’ll be Gentle
  • In place of considering to do evil in retaliation. Your thoughts would only be on doing good
  • In place of doubt, unbelief and insecurity you’ll have Faith, Hope and Trust in the Lord
  • In place of Emotional Explosions, Outbursts, or Pride you will have Meekness
  • In place of being Hot Tempered you’ll have Temperance

2. The Word of God will be practiced in your life as you increase in Knowledge and Understanding

3. You’ll will have less desires for the things of the World and deepened desires for the things of God

4. You will not easily give in to sin or the enemy’s cunning devices

5. You’ll increase in Strength to endure trials and temptations without murmuring and complaining but in Joy.

If  you have seen these evidence in your life, then you have been growing!

The more we engulf our life in the things of God, the more we will grow.

Keys To Obtaining Spiritual Growth

growth‘Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you’

Life is a mad dash!…

It often seems like the 24 hours allotted in a day, is barely enough time to get anything done. By the time we blink, turn around and sit down, the day is all over and it’s time to go to bed and prepare for another day.

Why Am I saying all of this?

Because even thou we are Christians, we are still affected by the limitations of time like everyone else. And with family obligations, job obligations and other obligations, where are we going to find time to do this Christianity thing right,  and put God first?

Seeking God is not about convenience. As Christians, we should not have to ‘find’ time for God but we should ‘make’ time for him. Make him priority in our lives. Let your life be centered  around him and he will always see you through.

Our spiritual growth is dependent on our ‘Seeking Life’. The more time we allot for seeking after God, the more we will mature in the Spirit. The remedy for spiritual growth has remained the same even thou thousands of years has passed, If we want to grow spiritually, and to take leaps and bounds we must become Seekers of God.

Our Bible Study for Spiritual Growth will focus on one main Scripture of Study.

Matt 6:33 KJV

But seek ye first the kingdom of God,

and his righteousness;

and all these things shall be added unto you

Spiritual Growth is not an overnight process, it happens gradually. Think of a baby for example;  it slowly matures once given the proper care and nourishment  and as time progresses, he learns how to walk, talk, and behave in different circumstances. Every year is a learning process, and  he grows a little bit more than the year before.

This example is similar to our Spiritual Growth. We begin also as a babe in Christ, and as time progress, once we allow God to work on our lives, we become mature in the Spirit.

God’s FIRST answer for Spiritual Growth is found in the scripture

Matt 6: 33 KJV

But seek ye first the kingdom of God,

and his righteousness

and all these things shall be added unto you

During this Bible Study for Spiritual Growth, we will segment this well known scripture into three main parts and then focus on each area.

  • Part 1 – Becoming a Seeker of God
  • Part 2 – Seeking the Kingdom of God
  • Part 3 –  All these things shall be added unto you

Part 1: Seeking God

So Jesus told us in Matthew that we should become a seeker , not just be acquainted with God or have knowledge of His Word, but to seek after God. When someone seeks after something, this simply means that it cannot be easily seen by the eyes or easily found. It is hidden out of the eye sight. Right?

So in order to find what you are searching for,  there need to be a some of determination and diligence on the seeker’s part.

Have you ever tried to find something you misplaced?  You literally turned your home upside down and did not rest until you found what you were searching for.  Am I correct?

The same thing applies for seeking after God. Do not stop, until you find what your heart longs after. Do not stop until you’ve reached the place in God that you yearn to reach; and even then, still do not stop, because there is still so much more to attain.

Seeking,  always first begins with a ‘Desire’. You have a desire to retrieve what you have lost because what you lost was of value and importance. Let’s go back to you ‘turning your house inside out’. Whatever you lost that day, wasn’t it important for you to find?

Question:  Is your Spiritual Growth important enough to you, for you to seek after it?

Take  a few seconds to really ponder this answer, because the answer affect the rest of your journey

When we seek after God, it will be ignited by ‘the desire’ to find God’, which makes seeking not a task but a pleasure. This Desire forms the ‘Drive’ to get it done.

Seeking > Desire > Drive

The Hebrew word for Seek, actually means

  • to aim at or strive after
  • to desire (to have a strong feeling of wanting to have something or wishing for something to happen)
  • to endeavor (try hard to achieve something)
  • enquire (to ask for information about something. To conduct a formal investigation)

Wow! Such a strong message lies within this one word ‘seek’. So now we realize that God is not asking us, in this Bible Study for Spiritual Growth, to just to become familiarized with information about him, No!

He want us to strive and search and enquire after him, with a strong feeling of longing.

God’s Promise for the Seeker:

Jeremiah 29:13 KJV

And ye shall seek me,

and find me,

when ye shall search for me with your heart

God promised his children that we will find him, once we seek him with our whole hearts. He will not hide from us but he will come.

PART 2 : The Kingdom of God

Tip:

Never take any word in the bible for granted.

Every word has a meaning and a purpose for being there

Matthew 6: 33 KJV

But seek ye first the kingdom of God,

and his righteousness;

and all these things shall be added unto you

God told us EXACTLY what to seek  after to get EXACTLY what we want, which is Spiritual Growth. So we are not only suppose to seek, but Jesus was specific about what we should seek ; ‘the Kingdom of God’.

Have you ever noticed that before? … Jesus was specific …Seek after the Kingdom of God.

Now why was Jesus so specific?

If you noticed, when Jesus spoke parables, he made mention of two different Kingdoms. The Kingdom of Heaven and the Kingdom of God. For this Bible Study for Spiritual Growth, we will only focus on the one that is mentioned  in our scripture of study.

So What is the Kingdom of God?

Romans 14: 17 KJV

The Kingdom of God is not meat and drink;

but righteousness,

peace and joy in the Holy Ghost

1 Corinthians 4:20 KJV

For the Kingdom of God is not in word,

but in power

The Kingdom of God is not anything tangible. Instead it is Righteousness,  Peace, Joy,  and Power that can only be attained through the Holy Ghost, which is the free gift of God.

Jesus commanded us in Matthew 6: 33 to seek after the Kingdom of God First. So in actuality when Jesus was speaking he was saying :

  • seek after Righteousness First
  • seek after Peace First
  • seek after Joy First
  • seek after his power First

This is some Powerful Stuff!

Make God’s righteousness, peace, joy and his power the number one priority in your life,  and ‘all these things shall be added unto you’

This brings me to Part 3 of this Bible Study for Spiritual Growth :

Then, All These Things Shall Be Added Unto You

One of my first questions, when I read this verse, was ‘what was these things that will be added unto me if I seek God’s Kingdom first?’

Tip: Always ask questions when reading your bible. Then go searching for the answers.

I found the answer!

It’s in the previous verses of this same chapter. If you read the previous verses you will realize that Jesus was speaking to the issues of today’s day. Presently in the 21st century everyone is worried  about tomorrow. About their job, food, their mortgage, financial worries and the list goes. Jesus is speaking to us in Matthew 6: 25. He says

Take no thought ( Do not worry) about your life

  • what you will eat
  • what you will drink
  • what ye shall wear

Jesus admonished us to build our faith; the same God that takes care of the fowl of the air and the grass of the field will take care of us as well, for he knows what we have need of even before we even ask .

So what is all these things that shall be added unto you, if you seek the Kingdom of God first?

  • Everything that you need for survival.
  • Everything that you are concerned about.
  • Every need that has to be met.
  • Every desire of your life.

God has chosen this Bible Study for Spiritual Growth to let you know that if you seek after my righteousness, my peace, my joy, and my power FIRST all these things shall be added.

God cannot lie. He means exactly what he says.

So this means then, that our priorities have to be adjusted a little ( or maybe a lot).

No more shall we ‘try to find time for God’ in our busy schedules. We will instead put the Kingdom of God first in our lives and we will seek diligently after him. And everything that we desire will be added to us by God.

Like as a Baby needs nourishment to grow, as Children of God, when we draw Closer to God, we will also Grow
